~A place to showcase my growth~
Jared Freeman's Digital Portfolio

Unit I: The Hunger Games
How do we communicate our learning, reflection, and growth in digital spaces?
The main way that I comunicate my growth in digital spaces is by using my new knowlegde to make something that reflects what I have learned how to do. For example, I am communicating my growth in website making by reflecting on what I have done before with websites and now keeping my past expirences in mind when making this one.
Another example was when I made this chart about the characters in The Hunger Games as a way to showcase what I learned when reading the book. This shows my growth about understanding the charcaters and what their role is in the society within the country of Panem. For the application section for my summer homework I created a hierarchy chart to show who's at the top of Panem and who's at the bottom...

I can connect this to myself becuase whenever I read books of any kind I always think about the relationships between characters. One of the major themes of the book is how there is this delicate system that is very effective at controling people. This applies to the real world to because no matter what system is applied to a certain place, you will always have subclasses of people. Just like there was the rich people in the capitol and the Seam in District 12 we can see that even to this day!
If you want more information about how this chart is layed out and what "rules" I used to place people in their spots open this document to the right!
Real World Connection!

After reading The Hunger Games one of the things that I connected it to was an event that took place in this country that resembled the reaping: The Draft Lottery. Basically it was when men were choosen to go fight as a soilder becuase the US was in constant need of them. And it wasn't like you volenteered for it. If your name was choosen then that means you're picked and you will become a soilder, unless there was a specal case.
I found an article that explained more about what the draft is and what the process was like when choosing the names. Here is an excerpt from the article that I thought sounded familiar...
There are 366 blue plastic capsules containing birth dates were placed in a large glass jar and drawn by hand to assign order-of-call numbers to all men within the 18-26 age range specified in Selective Service law. With radio, film and TV coverage, the capsules were drawn from the jar, opened, and the dates inside posted in order.
I chose this certain paragraph from the article becuase it discribed the process that went in to choosing the names. When I read it it remeinded me of how the reaping was described in the book. I made that connection becuase just like durring the reaping in the District 12, if your name was called it was basically your death sentence. This shows that even though they were used for entirerly different purposes that this idea for selecting people isn't totoally uncommen. I connected to this to myself while reading I thought about how I would feel if I lived in a place that did this ... then I thought about it and realized that I do live in a place that does something like that. I found an article that calculated what some of the most commenly used words were in The Hunger Games!
This article compared different book series and the word choice used by the authors. I found it very interesting to see what words really were reapeted a lot and thinking about how some of those words were critical to describing a certain scene in the book. For exmaple, the first graphic down below shows the most commen adverbs in The Hunger Games.

Then this next one below shows the most commenly used adjectives!

In my opinioin what makes The Hunger Games such a great book was the word choice. I love reading this book becuase I always feel so emersed in what is going on. So this connects to me becuase I totally agree with the author of this article that says that these words were repeted often to create this attitute and setting that fits well in conveying the story and emotions of Katniss. Map of Panem
These pictures are maps of Panem and the dictricts. These are all made to show the comparision between the United States and Panem. This connects to me becuase I love to visualize the worlds in which books take place. I chose some of the ones that I liked best.
